St George’s bank Holiday
Thursday, May 14th, 2009 by Iain Donaldson
Local Councillors joined local MP John Leech to celebrate St George’s Day at the parade through Manchester.
John Leech MP said, “The parade was a big success and everybody had a great time. In Parliament I have backed calls for St George’s Day to be a bank holiday in England . We have less bank holidays than most other European countries and it would be great to be able to celebrate St George’s Day as a national holiday in England.”
John continued, “We should take more time to celebrate our heritage. I was honoured to be asked to join the children of Cavendish Road Primary school on St Georges Day for a traditional English School dinner of fish and chips, and apple crumble! It was great to listen to the children talk about the story of St George.”

Your local Liberal Democrat Councillors have succeeded in getting the City Council to resurface roads or pavements on Western Circle, part of Errwood Road, Brayside Road, Redstone Road and Brosely Avenue.
However, many other streets in our area are also in desperate need of resurfacing. Icy weather over the winter has left many local roads and pavements in an even worse condition than before. Yet the Labour run Council is still penny pinching by only resurfacing the very worst few. The Council recently said that the potholes in the picture, on Heathside Road, do not need to be repaired!
Local campaigner Bill Fisher said, “Labour’s penny pinching policy is a false economy. They pay out
millions of pounds each year in trip claims and yet wont keep our roads and pavements in a decent condition.”
Lib Dem councillors Iain Donaldson, John Cameronand Rod Isherwood successfully opposed a planning application to turn a shop on Burnage Lane into a take away.
Iain Donaldson said, There comes a point where there are too many takeaways, which are shuttered up during the day and can cause litter and late night noise problems, and not enough choice in local shops. In this case a takeaway would have caused parking and traffic problems as well. We are pleased that are concerns were heeded.”
Labour Betrays Local Tenants
Thursday, May 14th, 2009 by Iain Donaldson
Local tenants are up-in-arms about this year’s 5.6% rent increase. The Labour government have given Councils extra money to keep the rise to less than 3%, but have refused to give any funding to Housing Associations, such as Southway. This means tenants are being hit with a 5.6% rent increase.
Locally, Labour are being accused of “breathtaking hypocrisy” for criticising the increases that have been imposed by their own government!
Liberal Democrat John Leech MP has challenged the government in a parliamentary debate to change their rules so that Southways tenants are not hit by such a large increase. He said: “Thousands of former council tenants in south Manchester were promised that they would be no worse off if they voted for transfer to a housing association, but they are now being short- changed by the Government’s decision not to include housing associations. I have challenged Ministers to make proposals for fully compensating local tenants.”
Lib Dem Housing Spokesperson, Burnage Councillor Iain Donaldson, said: “Labour are showing
breathtaking hypocrisy by pretending to campaign against these rent increases. Everyone knows it is their own Labour Government who are letting local people down once again. Hard pressed local families can ill afford these inflation busting rises. Labour must keep its promises to tenants in South Manchester by extending the help to Housing Association tenants.”
